Abstract

Healing of the edentulous ridge after extraction of periodontally compromised teeth is different from that in teeth without periodontal disease in terms of bone resorption and soft tissue shrinkage. More dimensional changes in the edentulous ridge are often observed after extraction of periodontally compromised teeth. To compensate for and to prevent the decrease in the dimension of the edentulous ridge, various ridge preservation techniques have been proposed. In this case report, after extraction of the periodontally compromised tooth or implant, ridge preservation was performed in three patients. The extraction socket was filled with deproteinized bovine bone mineral, and a double layer of collagen membrane was overlaid on the graft material. After 5 to 6 months, implant fixtures were placed in the preserved ridge.
